Tech Mood Index
Hiring a mentor costs money and time, so people mostly do it when they're stuck on something specific. The reasons they give are a real read on how the industry actually feels.

What this month's reading means
The dial runs from Scramble at 0, where people reach out because something went wrong, to Build at 100, where they've picked a next move and want help getting there. Fifty is the midpoint, set by our two-year average. At 50, the mood reads as no reading.
A reading in the middle means the room is split. Roughly as many people are reaching out to get unstuck as to build toward something, and neither side is pulling hard. It's the quiet part of the cycle – no fire, no boom.
One month's jump is mostly noise. Watch the direction over several readings, not any single swing.
This isn't a forecast. It won't tell you what hiring does next quarter. It tells you what people have already decided to do about their own careers, which usually moves before the headlines catch up.
Two years of the dial
Each point is a rolling average over recent months, so a single noisy month doesn't jerk the line. The dashed line is the long-run average: above it, more people are building than usual; below it, more are scrambling.
What people are asking to learn
The dial shows how people feel; this shows what they're doing about it – the skills mentees ask for most, and which way each moved last quarter. It runs on a full quarter, so it shifts more slowly than the monthly mood; a steady list next to a moving dial is normal.
Ranked by how often each skill comes up in mentorship requests over the last 90 days. Movement compares to the quarter before.
Wherever you are on the dial
That's the market. This is you. Whichever band you're in right now, someone here has already been through it and come out the other side.
Scramble
You've been let go, or you can see it coming. You don't need big-picture career advice. You need someone who's job-hunted in this exact market and can save you weeks of guessing.

Nothing's on fire, which is its own kind of stuck. You're good at your job but unsure it'll still matter in a couple of years. Talk to someone who's stood at that same crossroads.
Find a mentor for a resetBuild
You know what you're aiming for: staff, management, founder, a move into something new. You want someone who's already made that exact jump and remembers how it went.
Find a mentor who's done itHow we measure this
We read anonymized mentorship requests and sort each one by why the person reached out: to get out of a bad spot, or to build toward a better one. Each reading scores that mix on a rolling window from 0 (Scramble) to 100 (Build), set so our two-year average sits at 50.
It's not a survey, and that's the point. Surveys capture what people will say to a stranger; this captures what they'll pay for. It only counts people who've already decided to act, so it's a skewed sample, but it skews the same way every month, which is what makes the movement worth reading.
Individual requests and accounts are never identified. We read from thousands of requests a month and publish the direction and shape of the move, never the raw counts.
The people behind the numbers
Every point on the dial is a real person who booked time with a mentor. Those mentors work in the field and get paid directly by the mentees they help – no recruiters, no course-sellers.
Your move doesn't have to wait for the market.
Whatever the dial says this month, the next step is the same: talk to someone who's already done the thing you're trying to do.
